MaRvel: Masculinidades (Re)veladas is a project that explores gender as a cultural and everyday construction, that constitutes an aspect of the bodies, relations and spaces we inhabit. We take masculinities as a starting point in our exploration to better understand the impact of gender on the lives of boys and men (and, therefore, everyone), without losing sight of the plurality and diversity with which we exist in the world.
BAGABAGA Studios created the “Among men” documentary to breathe life into this desire to portray plural masculinities. Off the back of the documentary, we created a pilot programme for young people under the guardianship of juvenile detention centres in the Instituto Profissional O Terço (Porto) and Obra do Padre Grilo (Matosinhos). We created a facilitation booklet to share the word, and the programme can be implemented in schools or other community spaces. The project involves going to partner schools to show the documentary as well as organizing awareness-raising, training and consulting activities with professionals.
We want to open up spaces for dialogue and critical reflection, with the final aim of building spaces for freedom. MaRvel is a space for curiosity, research and reflection. A place to feed a critical perspective and look into the world with eyes that want to see: return to questions as the beginning of a process of learning about and discovering how to behave in the world.
MaRvel: Masculinidades (Re)veladas is a project funded by the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism, EEA Grants 2014-2021.
